How to Fax Form 8821 to the IRS
How to complete and fax Form 8821 when another person needs access to specific IRS tax information without representation authority.

Form 8821 lets the IRS disclose specified tax information to a person or organization. It can be useful for a lender, accountant, family member, or other appointee who needs records but does not need to represent you before the IRS.
That distinction matters. Form 8821 allows access to information. Form 2848 grants eligible representatives authority to act for you in the tax matters listed on the form.
Check whether online submission is easier
The IRS offers online options for tax authorizations. When both the taxpayer and appointee can use the service, it may be faster than faxing and can accept electronic signatures.
For a faxed Form 8821, use handwritten signatures. If the request does not fit the online system, the paper form remains valid when completed and sent correctly.
Find the correct Form 8821 fax number
There is no universal number. The Form 8821 instructions contain a “Where To File” chart organized by the taxpayer’s state, territory, or foreign address. Open the current instructions and select the authorization unit from that table.
For a specific-use authorization, send the form to the IRS office handling the related matter instead of the normal authorization unit. If an IRS notice gives you a direct number, follow the notice.
Complete the authorization precisely
Name each taxpayer and appointee clearly. List the type of tax information, the relevant tax form, and the exact years or periods. The IRS will not accept a vague request for every tax matter and every year.
Joint filers generally prepare separate forms. Review the checkbox for receiving copies of notices, and decide whether older tax information authorizations should remain in effect.
Before pressing send
- Use the newest Form 8821.
- Confirm the taxpayer identification details.
- Limit the authorization to the information actually needed.
- Add handwritten signatures for a fax submission.
- Select the destination from the current IRS chart.
- Preview every page and save the fax confirmation.
Keep the completed form with your records. A fax delivery report is useful proof of transmission, but processing can still take time and the IRS may contact you if information is missing.
