An online fax app can send to another country without an international phone plan. The service handles the call, but you still need the correct country code and a destination it supports.

International faxes often cost more than domestic ones. Check the destination and final price before sending, especially for a long document.

Format the number correctly

Start with the plus sign or select the country in the app. Add the country calling code, followed by the recipient’s area code and local fax number. Many countries use a leading zero for domestic calls that must be removed in international format.

For example, a number written locally as 020 ... may use +44 20 ... when called from outside the United Kingdom. This rule is not identical everywhere, so confirm the international version with the recipient.

Do not add your own international access prefix such as 011 unless the fax service specifically asks for it. Apps normally expect a plus sign and country code.

Confirm that it is really a fax line

Ask the recipient for a fax number that can accept international calls. Some offices publish a domestic toll-free number that cannot be reached from abroad. Others route faxes through a central office in a different country.

For government, medical, legal, or banking documents, verify the number on the organization’s official site or by calling a published telephone number.

Send the document

  1. Select the destination country.
  2. Enter the international number without an extension.
  3. Attach or scan the document.
  4. Add a cover sheet with the recipient, sender, reference, and callback details.
  5. Preview page order and readability.
  6. Review the charge and send once.
  7. Save the confirmation with the sent PDF.

Use a callback number that includes your own country code. If the recipient needs to contact you, a domestic-only number may be confusing.

If the overseas fax fails

Check whether you kept a domestic trunk zero, selected the wrong country, or used a toll-free line with international restrictions. Time zones also matter because some office fax systems are switched off or forwarded outside business hours.

After one retry, contact the recipient and ask for the full international fax format or another approved submission method.

Country availability, number formatting rules, page limits, retries, and prices vary by service and destination. Confirm the full international number with the recipient.
